Chinggis Khan Square

In July 1921, in the center of Ulaanbaatar, Damdin Sükhbaatar, the "hero of the revolution", declared the final independence of Mongolia from China. The square bore his name until 2013 (July 15, 2013, the government renamed this square Chinggis Khan Square) and features an equestrian statue of Sükhbaatar. The original concrete statue has been replaced by a bronze copy. Sükhbaatar would have been very disappointed to have taken that this place was the scene of the first demonstrations, which, in 1990, led to the fall of communism in Mongolia. It is now sometimes used as a gathering place and hosts ceremonies and even rock concerts, but it is generally peaceful, where only photographers linger. Near the center of the square, look for the large plaque listing the old names of the City: Ôrgôô, Nomiin, Khuree, Ikh Khuree, and Niislel Khuree. The huge marble construction at the northern end was completed in 2006, in time for the 8th centenary of Genghis Khan's coronation. In the center, the seated statue of Genghis Khan, in bronze, looks down on the nation. His third son, Ogodeï, and his grandson, Koublai, sit respectively in the west and in. ballast. Two famous Mongolian soldiers (Boruchu and Mukhlai) guard the entrance to the monument. Behind this monument stands the Houses of Parliament, commonly known as the Government House. The inner courtyard of the building houses a large ceremonial yurt, used to accommodate visiting dignitaries.
