Bayanzurkh, known as the "black mountain," is located 27km from the city of Sainshand, Dornogobi Province, in the Southeast part of Mongolia.

Bayanzurkh, standing at a modest 1031 meters, may not be the tallest mountain in Mongolia, but it holds a profound spiritual significance for the Mongolian people. Once known as the 'tomb mountain,' it was the final resting place of the third highest lama of the Gobi—Jamiyandanzan. His memory is honored with several temples, and the belief that his spirit still resides here has turned the mountain into a sacred pilgrimage site.

Today, many stupas and ovoos are built all around and on top of the mountain. From its very top, you can have a beautiful view over the region of Sainshand and even spot the Transsiberian train that links Ulan Bator to the border of China.
