Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad) is a prominent attraction located 58 km east of Ulaanbaatar, within the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park in the protected area of Khan Khentii. This 24-meter high rock formation, which resembles a turtle, never fails to capture the interest of visitors. Historically, it was known as "Möngöt Tsokhio" (Silver Rock) by Mongolians. According to legend, Galdan Boshigt Khan of the Oirats suffered significant losses in a battle with the Manchu and hid his remaining strength near Turtle Rock. It is said that he concealed his carried gold and silver on top of Turtle Rock inside a natural cavity before fleeing westward. As a result, the rock has been revered as the guardian of the Great Khan's treasure, leading to its names "Möngöt Tsokhio" and "Möngöt Khad."
