Khorgo volcano
Khorgo volcano

Khorgo is located in the center of Tariat soum, Arkhangai aimag. This beautiful area, which is not only a sanctuary, has been under special state protection since 1965, and a national park since 1994. Our geographers have determined that it is a dormant volcano that erupted about 9 thousand years ago. In other words, this is not only the last dormant volcano among the dormant volcanoes in our country, but also a “new” mountain that is still steaming.

Khorgo Mountain is 2240 meters above sea level, and the hot molten magma that erupted from Khorgo Mountain has flowed down the earth for hundreds of kilometers to the east through the valleys of the Suman and Chuluut rivers. Scientists have speculated that the magma that flowed through this approximately 10-20 kilometer wide valley may have solidified into a 40-50 meter thick mantle of rock.
