Terelj National Park

Located in the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Terelj is 85 km north of the capital and 1600 m above sea level, in a forest area of alpine character. Terelj means 'ledon' (Latin, ledum), a plant which flowers in late spring just before the leaves appear on the trees and which is abundant in the region. Edelweiss also blooms profusely there. This flower, symbol of eternity, is used to light the first fire in the yurt of the newlyweds. The region, particularly beautiful, has sometimes been chosen as a setting for the shooting of Mongolian films. The excursion allows you to cross impressive rocky massifs with strange shapes. One of them conceals a cave where monks hid during the years of repression, others look like long bodies of prehistoric animals bristling with spikes. The most popular is the rock of Ia Turtle (Melkhii khad), not far from which there is a former holiday camp for young pioneers. A little before arriving at Turtle Rock, you can see a life-size reconstruction of dinosaurs of various species.
