Khogno Khan National Park – Desert, Mountains, and Monasteries in One Place

Khogno Khan National Park, also known as Khugnu Tarna, is a spectacular protected area in central Mongolia where the Gobi meets the steppe. It’s one of the few places in the country where visitors can experience sand dunes, rocky mountains, grasslands, and historical ruins in a single day.

Located around 280 km west of Ulaanbaatar, this park is ideal for hiking, camel riding, exploring monasteries, and witnessing Mongolia’s diverse ecosystems up close.

What to See

  • The Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes – a stretch of mini Gobi
  • Khogno Khan Mountain – excellent for hiking and photography
  • Erdene Khamba Monastery ruins hidden in the cliffs
  • Wildlife such as gazelles, eagles, and wild sheep

Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit: May to September
  • Bring sun protection for the dunes and sturdy shoes for rocky trails
  • Combine with a trip to Karakorum or Tsenkher Hot Springs
  • Overnight ger camps available in the area
