Tonyukuk Inscription

The Tonyukuk Inscription is one of the oldest Turkic monuments in Mongolia, dating back to the 8th century. It was erected in honor of the wise advisor Tonyukuk, who served as counselor to two Göktürk emperors. These stone steles are located in Bain Tsokto, near Ulaanbaatar.

  • Location: Bain Tsokto, 60 km southeast of Ulaanbaatar
  • Date: Around 716–735 CE
  • Language: Old Turkic, written in Orkhon script
  • Importance: Oldest known Turkic inscription composed by the person it honors
