Horse Racing at Naadam Festival

Horse racing is one of the central events of the Naadam Festival, celebrated as part of Mongolia’s "Three Manly Games." Deeply rooted in nomadic culture, it is not just a sport but a symbol of heritage, endurance, and youthful courage. This traditional race takes place on open grasslands, not on closed racetracks, giving it a raw and authentic energy that reflects Mongolia’s wide and wild landscapes.

Races are divided by the age of the horse and range in distance from 15 to 30 kilometers. Horses are specially trained for months in advance and are considered family treasures among herding communities. The true stars of the event are the jockeys — children aged from 5 to 13 — who ride without saddles and guide their horses with remarkable balance, instinct, and bravery.

The main venue for horse racing during Naadam in Ulaanbaatar is Khui Doloon Khudag, a vast open plain about 30 kilometers west of the city. During the festival, it transforms into a festive field with families, riders, horses, spectators, and food vendors, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. There is no traditional seating — spectators line the finishing route, cheer for the horses, and take part in the lively spirit of the celebration.

Outside the capital, every province, town, and even small village across Mongolia celebrates its own Naadam festival, complete with traditional horse races. These local events often offer a more intimate and authentic experience. In fact, some of the most exciting and memorable races can be found in small villages, where the tradition is proudly preserved and deeply woven into daily life.

In Mongolian belief, the horse is more than just transportation — it is a trusted companion, a warrior’s asset, and a sacred creature. Watching the long-distance races, visitors witness not only competition but also a deep bond between human and horse that has shaped the identity of Mongolia for generations.

Note: Viewing takes place near the finishing line, where horses arrive after their long journey across the steppe.
