The Ikh Burkhant Complex in Dornod Province is one of Mongolia’s most spiritually and artistically significant monuments. Built in the 19th century by local artisans under the direction of the renowned monk Danzanravjaa, this site features a massive relief of the Bodhisattva Janraisig (Avalokiteshvara) carved into a hillside.

What to See

  • The 30-meter-long rock carving of Janraisig reclining on the slope
  • 20 surrounding stone statues representing various protective deities
  • Traditional Mongolian Buddhist architectural details and symbolism
  • Wide views of the eastern steppe and peaceful atmosphere

Travel Tips

  • There is no entry fee, but visitors should respect the sacred nature of the site
  • Bring snacks and water — there are no shops nearby
  • A local guide or driver from Choibalsan is recommended
  • Best accessed by 4x4 vehicle due to remote location and dirt roads

Best Time to Visit
