Erdene Zuu Monastery is Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery, founded in 1586 near the ruins of Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol Empire. It marks the formal introduction of Tibetan Buddhism into Mongolia. Despite the destruction during the communist era, some temples survived and were later restored, making it both a functioning monastery and a historical museum.
