Horse riding

Mongolian horses are small, sturdy, and exceptionally resilient. They are about 1.40 to 1.45 meters (4.59 – 4.76 feet) tall at the withers, which is similar in size to a pony by Western standards. They are easy to guide and follow commands well. However, you will need to use the neck rein system for steering and mount up in the Western style. But these horses are strong, can gallop quickly, and will not tire easily.

Our horse treks, part of our 'discover' tours, are designed flexibly. They typically last one day or a few hours, making them perfect for beginners. Our local equestrian guides, always on hand, will ensure everyone feels comfortable, including children. For younger ones, there's the option to ride with a Mongolian horse rider. We usually ride at a leisurely walking pace but for those seeking more adventure, a second, more experienced rider group can try trotting or galloping. Remember, participation in the trek is always optional, and for those who prefer not to ride, walking is a pleasant alternative, with a vehicle always available.

General advice:

  • First, to ride a Mongolian horse, we must mount from the left side. Horses don't like when we mount from the right side.
  • To start the horses, we have to say "Chu Chu."
  • We need to start slowly for a few minutes, and then we can transition to trotting and galloping.
  • On the horse, we don't do things like changing clothes or taking pictures...
  • It is not advisable to wear a loose cape as the sound of the wind inside the cape can frighten the horses.
  • You are advised to wear equestrian boots. Also, shoes with thick soles and grips should be avoided as they could get caught in the stirrups in case of a fall.
  • It’s remarkably advisable to bring a pair of gaiters if you have a horse trek lasting several days.
  • You must wear a riding cap. We will provide one if you still need one on the spot.
  • It’s strictly forbidden to wear spurs.

The saddles provided are Russian-type, with a leather cushion on a wooden frame. These saddles are comfortable and suitable for the structure of the Mongolian horse. We also have English saddles for the equestrian tours for the persons who prefer them. Please ask us before the beginning of the stay.
